In 1972 in Reykjavik Bobby Fischer, the enfant terrible of the chess world, challenged Boris Spassky for the World Championship. The tantrums, double dealing and paranoia displayed as America challenged the Soviet Union in Iceland that summer made the match more like scenes from Alice Through the Looking Glass than a sporting contest.
